| Dr. Migdalia Reyes is a Professor in the School of Social Work at San Jose State University. She received a BA from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Connecticut, with a major in Community Organizing, a minor in Case Work, and a specialization in Women´s Studies. She completed a Doctorate in Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a concentration in Research, Policy and Administration. Dr. Reyes has taught graduate level social work for 31 years.
Prior to coming to SJSU, she was a professor and the director of the Puerto Rican Studies Program at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work.
Dr. Reyes currently is the chair of and teaches in the Social Work Practices Sequence. She also teaches a Spanish for social workers practice course that she helped develop. Her contributions to the university/college include serving as Associate Dean from 2000 to 2005 for SJSU´s College of Social Work. She is chair of the Scholarship Committee, and chair of the Spanish Counseling Certification Committee.
Among Dr. Reyes´ professional and community activities are a small practice at Gardner Family Care Center (Centro de Bienestar), where she delivered mental health services, primarily to Latinos/as, and sexual minorities. She also completed research and consultation on a number of projects including an HIV/AIDS community assessment project for Santa Clara County; a program evaluation for the Centers for Disease Control (the Mexican American Community Services Agency); and training for Santa Clara County Department of Alcohol and Drug Services, the Department of Mental Health, and Social Service Agency. Her research focus is alcohol and other drugs among lesbian women, and Latinos/as.
