Guidelines for Providing Culturally Responsive Services to LGBT Clients
This 1-hour introductory training provides guidelines for all agencies serving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) clients to help implement the National CLAS Standards in an LGBT welcoming and inclusive services context. The training reviews basic vocabulary and linguistic considerations, condenses the fourteen National CLAS Standards into five recommended standards of LGBT CLAS, and outlines action steps to achieve them.
The recommended standards of LGBT CLAS are:
1) LGBT-Inclusive Policies and Procedures 2) Basic LGBT Training and Supervision of Staff 3) Appropriate Language 4) Welcoming and Inclusive Climate 5) Linkages, Referrals and Resources
The training is designed for county administrators, program directors, supervisors, evaluators and others responsible for planning and monitoring the qualify of substance abuse treatment and prevention programs and systems. By the end of the trainings, participants will be able to:
> Summarize the rationale behind providing culturally-responsive services to LGBT individuals and families > Differentiate between basic terms used to discuss sexual orientation and gender identity > Recognize five standards of care which can be utilized to improve the efficacy of health and social services for LGBT clients within all service environments > Relate the five recommended standards of LGBT care to the National Standards on CLAS developed by the Office of Minority Health

Best Practices in Serving LGBT Individuals and Families
This 3-6 hour advanced training assists agencies wishing to implement evidence-based practices effective in serving LGBT clients within both integrated and LGBT-specific programs. The training explores vocabulary and linguistic considerations in depth, and provides eseential information about sexual orientation, sexual identity and gender identity. Five recommended standards of LGBT CLAS, based on National CLAS Standards, are presented along with action steps and examples to help carry them out. The training is designed for line and intake staff, AOD counselors, case managers, educators, clinicians, therapists and others responsible for implementing effective substance abuse treatment and prevention services.
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
1) Use appropriate LGBT-related terminology for written forms and oral communications 2) Recognize seven potential treatment needs of the full diversity of LGBT clients 3) Recommend ten ways agencies can become more welcoming and inclusive of LGBT individuals and families 4) Identify resources and best practice models effective in improving LGBT client enrollment, engagement, retention and outcomes
Note: This training can be modified in length up to 6 hours to reinforce the learning objectives through additional case study analysis, role play and multimedia materials.
