Workshop Descriptions
Workshop #1: Cultural Responsiveness in Serving LGBT
This is a basic introduction to the LGBT community and its diversity, the issues, challenges and opportunities that are associated with providing AOD prevention, treatment and recovery support services to LGBT clients. Participants will obtain practical information that can be applied to improve services for LGBT consumers. The workshop is designed for Intake staff, AOD Counselors, Health Education Staff, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists.
Workshop #2: Collecting and Using LGBT-Relevant Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Sexual History Information
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), “The ability to elicit baseline demographic data about their LGBT client population is an important measure of competency for LGBT care providers.” This session, designed for Administrators, as well as Intake staff, AOD Counselors, Health Education Staff, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists, is intended to help implement the recommended policy in California agencies, by providing information about the value and necessity for the practice, sample policies and tools for institutionalizing the practice, and skills-building for staff to effectively implement the practice.
Workshop #3: Strengthening Linkages Between AOD Providers and LGBT Community Resources
California’s urban, suburban and rural communities are very different in the way that LGBT people are treated by the local culture, and by public and private institutions, including AOD providers. This workshop is designed to help individuals responsible for organizational governance, policy, administration, program planning, and service delivery—to build connections with and make use of LGBT resources in their communities, in the surrounding region, within the state, and outside of California in order to better serve LGBT consumers. The workshop will address such issues as marketing to this constituency, incorporating LGBT people in program development and service delivery, and assisting LGBT clients through appropriate use of available resources within a referral network.
Workshop #4: Promising and Emerging Best Practices in AOD Prevention and Treatment for LGBT
This workshop, designed for Program Administrators and Directors, Supervisors, Health Education Staff, Therapists and Counselors, is intended to assist local agencies to adopt and integrate evidence-based practices and program models that show promise or have been demonstrated as effective in serving LGBT consumers.
